LHS student dies after being hit by car

A Leominster High School student died Monday after a sport utility vehicle that another student was driving crashed into him, officials said.
The victim, Brandon Martinez, 15, of 64 Pleasant St., died after he was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Rebecca Richard, 17, according to Tim Connolly, a spokesman for Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.
LHS Principal William Hart said Martinez was a sophomore.
The collision happened around 2:20 p.m. as Martinez walked down the sidewalk along Kingman Drive toward the rear entrance to LHS, heading home, Connolly said.
Richard, a senior who lives at 46 Viscoloid Ave., lost control while speeding and trying to pass someone, Connolly said.
“As she was traveling down Kingman Drive, away from the school, she tried to pass a vehicle that was moving in front of her, Connolly said. “She tried to pass it on the right — she was driving about 50 miles per hour, according to a witness. As she drove on the right side of the road, she lost control. As a result, her vehicle spun around several times, crossed Kingman Drive, jumped the curb, and landed on the sidewalk.
“As the vehicle went over the curb, Connolly continued, “Brandon Martinez, who was walking home from school, traveling in the same direction as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, was struck by the driver’s side of the Jeep and it threw him about 10 feet.
Martinez died from his injuries “a short time later, Connolly said.
