Investing in the past
The senior population in area towns is on the rise. Some towns have full-time senior centers, others have less than that or nothing. Do you think town government should increase its spending on the needs of seniors to keep up with the growing population?

The issue is not if we need to help our seniors in town. The question is, how soon can we get started. With all the changes that seniors are constantly dealing with, they need a full time senior center. With the proper resources in place, their lives would be so much easier. A one stop resource center to help them and also give them some peace of mind would be a excellent idea. We are a town of young and old and all town people should be care for.

This thread is as funny as reading CL R&R. The real irony is that the thread started with the supposition that spending on elderly is only done at the expense of educating the young. IS this a one or the other thing? How much could a senior center cost anyway?

How is it insensitive to say that our shcools are a priority?!!! Education should be society's #1 priority, since that is where our economic muscle will come from in the future. Education is what will allow future generations of elderly to survive. If we don't aggresively educate our children, they're going to lose out on jobs and economic opportunities to other nations that do spend on education (India and China as great examples). If that happens, NONE of us will be provided for, old, young, middle aged. NONE.
Look beyond your egocentric view of the world. Its important to take care of those who laid the ground work, but not at the peril of those of the future.
Additionally, just because someone has lived to an older age, they are not automatically a hero. Age is age. Its not wisdom, heroics, or love incarnate. There are many elderly people who are wonderful additions to the community. And conversley, there are some that were bums when they were young and they're still bums now. Age doesn't change that.

Hi Sandra,
I think "our friend" Jack is probably suffering a mental hang-over from starring in George Orwell's 1984. I'll be willing to bet Bauer is not his last name but is in fact Kavorkian. What happened during your childhood, Jack? Were you abused and thusly have no compassion for our elders? ...the folks who fought our wars for us? ..the ones who gave us freedom?
Do us a favor, Jack, and put a round in the chamber now for yourself and save us all the misery.

You bet we should do more for the seniors.. they have paid thier dues and got us to where we are today. How bout giving something back.. after all.. a buck then ain't a buck now.. I know if we had a senior center.. it wouldn't be on the news for a stabbing or child porn.. or senior/child relationships..

TO Jack:
That is a very insensitive thing to say. I'm sure that if you had family that were senior citizens in our town you would feel differently. How about showing some respect to the elderly...I'm sure you would appreciate it when your older some day.

No, we have to many other things to spend our money on..like our school systems: EDUCATION is the future, NOT THE ELDERLY.
